ACCUPLACER Prep: Avoid Remedial Classes & Place Into College-Level Courses
When you enter a community college or university, one of the first tests you'll take is the ACCUPLACER. This placement test determines which English and Math courses you'll start in — and a low score can send you into remedial (developmental) courses that cost tuition credits but don't count toward your degree.
The good news: ACCUPLACER is highly preparable. With focused preparation, you can dramatically improve your placement scores, skip remedial courses, and start earning degree credits from your very first semester.
What Is the ACCUPLACER?
The ACCUPLACER is a suite of computer-adaptive placement tests developed by College Board (the same organization behind the SAT). It is used by over 1,500 colleges and universities across the United States to determine appropriate course placement for incoming students.
Unlike the SAT or ACT, the ACCUPLACER is not a pass/fail test. There are no wrong or right placements from the test's perspective — it simply measures your current skill level and places you in the course that matches. The goal is to demonstrate college-ready skill levels so you can start in credit-bearing courses.
The ACCUPLACER Tests
The ACCUPLACER suite includes several individual tests. Most colleges require Reading, Writing, and Math. Here are the most common tests:
Reading
20 questions testing comprehension of passages (informational and literary). Skills: main idea, inference, vocabulary in context, author's purpose.
Writing (WritePlacer)
One essay prompt. You write an argument essay on a given topic. Scored holistically 1–8 on development, organization, and language conventions.
Arithmetic
Whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percents, estimation, and number relationships. This is the foundational math test.
Quantitative Reasoning, Algebra & Statistics (QAS)
Ratios, linear equations, statistics, probability, and descriptive statistics. Required for STEM and business pathways.
Advanced Algebra & Functions (AAF)
Algebra II, trigonometry, functions, and polynomials. Needed for STEM programs and calculus placement.
NextGen ACCUPLACER
Updated versions of Reading, Writing, and Math with more complex scenarios, graphs, and extended reading passages. Many colleges have already switched to NextGen.
How ACCUPLACER Scoring Works
The ACCUPLACER is scored on a scale of 200–300 for multiple-choice tests. The WritePlacer essay is scored 1–8. Each college sets its own cutoff scores for college-level course placement. Here's a general benchmark:
| Test | Score Range | General College-Level Cutoff |
|---|---|---|
| Reading | 200–300 | 250+ (varies by school) |
| WritePlacer (Essay) | 1–8 | 5–6 (for college-level English) |
| Arithmetic | 200–300 | 250+ for college-level Math |
| QAS | 200–300 | 263+ for Statistics/Liberal Arts Math |
| AAF | 200–300 | 275+ for Pre-Calculus/Calculus |
Score requirements vary widely by institution. Always contact your college's placement testing office or check their website to find the exact score needed for your desired course. BAM's advisors pull this information for each student as part of our prep planning process.
Reading Placement: How to Score High
The Reading test is adaptive — harder questions give higher scores. The key skills tested are:
- Main idea and author's purpose: What is the primary point of this passage?
- Supporting details: Which detail from the passage supports a given claim?
- Inference: What can be logically concluded, even if not stated directly?
- Vocabulary in context: What does this word or phrase mean in this specific passage?
- Argument structure: What is the relationship between different parts of the passage?
Reading Prep Strategies
- Read the question first — know what you're looking for before reading the passage
- For main idea questions: read the first and last sentence of each paragraph
- For vocabulary: use context clues — look at the sentences around the word
- Eliminate obviously wrong answers — usually 2 can be dismissed immediately
- For inference questions: the correct answer will be directly supported by the text, not just plausible
WritePlacer Essay: How to Score 5–6
The WritePlacer asks you to write an essay on a given topic — typically a question about a social or personal issue. You have approximately 50–60 minutes. You are not judged on whether you agree or disagree with the topic, but on how well you write and organize your argument.
Scoring Criteria
- Purpose and Focus: Does your essay stay on topic with a clear central argument?
- Organization: Is your essay logically structured with intro, body paragraphs, and conclusion?
- Development: Do you support your argument with specific examples, evidence, or reasoning?
- Language Use: Do you use varied vocabulary and sentence structures?
- Conventions: Is your grammar, punctuation, and spelling accurate?
For the WritePlacer, a clear 5-paragraph structure consistently scores 5–6: Introduction with a clear thesis → Body Paragraph 1 (first reason + example) → Body Paragraph 2 (second reason + example) → Body Paragraph 3 (third reason or counterargument) → Conclusion restating thesis. BAM teaches a proven template for WritePlacer essays that students can apply in any topic scenario.
Math Placement: Arithmetic Through AAF
The ACCUPLACER math path starts with Arithmetic and moves up through QAS and AAF depending on your placement goals. Here's what each level requires:
Arithmetic — Foundation Skills
- Whole number operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division
- Fractions: adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing, comparing
- Decimals: converting to/from fractions, operations
- Percentages: percent of a number, percent change, word problems
- Estimation and rounding
QAS — Algebra and Statistics
- Ratios, rates, and proportions
- Linear equations and inequalities in one variable
- Basic statistics: mean, median, mode, range
- Probability and simple data analysis
- Basic geometry: area, perimeter, volume
AAF — Advanced Algebra
- Functions: notation, evaluation, composition, transformations
- Polynomials: factoring, division, operations
- Quadratic equations and inequalities
- Exponential and logarithmic functions
- Trigonometric basics and the unit circle
Don't prepare for AAF if you only need QAS placement. Identify your target course and prepare specifically for the score you need. Over-preparing wastes time; under-preparing costs semesters. BAM starts every student with a placement consultation to map the exact path forward.
Your ACCUPLACER 2-Week Fast-Track Plan
Most students can significantly improve their ACCUPLACER score in 2–4 weeks of focused preparation. Here's a focused 2-week plan:
| Day | Focus |
|---|---|
| Days 1–2 | Take a full diagnostic ACCUPLACER practice test → Identify weakest areas in Reading and Math |
| Days 3–5 | Math foundations: fractions, decimals, percentages, basic algebra review |
| Days 6–7 | Reading comprehension practice: 3 passages daily with full question analysis |
| Days 8–9 | WritePlacer: write 2 full essays, review with BAM specialist |
| Days 10–11 | Math target section (QAS or AAF): 20 questions per day with review |
| Day 12 | Full-length timed practice test under test conditions |
| Days 13–14 | Targeted review of remaining weak areas, rest before test day |
Test Day Tips
- No calculator: Unless your school provides one, the ACCUPLACER Arithmetic section is calculator-free. Practice mental math and pencil-and-paper calculations
- The test adapts: Don't panic if questions feel hard — harder questions mean you're doing well
- You can retake it: Most colleges allow retakes (sometimes after a waiting period). Don't rush — prepare thoroughly before your first attempt
- Sleep and nutrition: Test performance drops significantly with fatigue. Sleep 8 hours before test day
- Review your basics: Spend the day before doing light review only — no new content
